We all have our favorite products that make our life better, easier or more relaxed. I have a few of them too and I can’t stop raving about them to everyone I meet. So, it seemed a logical step to share my favorites with you, my fellow Cocooners. Discover what products made my life instantly more relaxed!
My normal alarm clock
If you’re using your phone as your alarm, you are not alone: 48% of people between 16 and 34 use their phone as their alarm. Having your phone wake you up means the first thing you do in the morning is touch your phone. And unfortunately, it’s just a small step from turning off your alarm to checking your mail or Instagram feed. Before you know it’s 30 minutes later and you are rushing to get out of the door or you’re leaving the house without breakfast.
I also used my phone as my alarm, and as a result, I found myself staying in bed at least 20 minutes longer to check my social media, email, the news and all other things that happened in the world while I was asleep.
When I started a digital detox, I decided to no longer use my phone to wake me up. I scoured the Internet for a regular alarm clock. Now I keep my phone outside of my bedroom and my mornings are more relaxed!
When I set out to buy my alarm clock, I wanted to have a very simple digital one because I don’t like the ticking sound some alarm clocks make.
The big advantage of using your phone as an alarm is that it is quite easy to turn off your alarm. Most ‘normal’ alarm clocks have these tiny ‘off’ and ‘snooze’ buttons! After a few searches, I found the perfect alarm clock, and I really love it (and so does everyone I show it to).
Lexon Flip Alarm Clock
I decided to buy this cool flip alarm clock from Lexon USA. I have the smaller travel version, but you can also buy a slightly bigger version.
This little guy wakes me up every morning, and I silence its alarm by literally flipping it. One side of the alarm clock says ‘off,’ and the other side says ‘on.’ When you want to set your alarm, you have to flip the clock to ‘off,’ and you’ll be able to set it time.
When it wakes you up, you can tap it to snooze your alarm, or you can flip it to turn the alarm off. It’s so much easier to use than an alarm clock with tiny buttons to snooze or switch off your alarm. I love this little alarm clock, and it helped me start my days in a much calmer way.
My water bottles
My water drinking habits were notoriously bad, but a few months ago I decided this had to change because I learned about how not drinking enough water is very stressful for your body. I figured out a way to drink more water and my glass water bottles and I became inseparable.
I didn’t want to use plastic bottles because of all the news about plastic particles in bottled water. Scientist discovered plastic particles in 93% of the bottled water they tested. These results and the fact that drinking from plastic bottles is terrible for the environment made me decide to start looking into glass bottles.
There was only one problem: I am a bit clumsy. I had visions of me shattering bottle after bottle. When I started my research to find the perfect bottle, I discovered I am not the only one who has butterfingers and that there are bottles especially for people like me!
Lifefactory glass bottles
The Lifefactory bottles come in a lot of different sizes and colors. You can also choose between different types of caps. The bottles are completely BPA/BPS-free and have this awesome rubber sleeve that protects your bottle if you drop it. I’ve dropped one of my Lifefactory bottles multiple times and it’s still in great shape. Of course it’s important to be careful, it’s glass and it can break!
My book ‘Self Compassion’ by Kristin Neff
Maybe you’ve heard the phrase self-compassion before. If you haven’t, I’ve included the definition of self-compassion according to Wikipedia.
“Self-compassion is extending compassion to one’s self in instances of perceived inadequacy, failure, or general suffering.”
Self-compassion is a term coined by Dr. Kristin Neff. She researched the subject and developed a theory about self-compassion.
After I finished an 8-week mindfulness course and was impressed by how it changed my life, I decided to follow another course. I choose to follow the 8-week self-compassion course developed by Kristin Neff.
During the first weeks of the self-compassion course, I struggled with the concept, and as a very self-critical person, I thought having compassion for myself wouldn’t help me at all. But a few weeks into the course the concept just ‘clicked’ and my resistance against the subject disappeared.
After completing the course, I can say that having compassion for myself is a fantastic skill to have! It changed my life for the better and made me a happier, more loving and calmer person. It taught me that having compassion for yourself isn’t selfish and doesn’t make me lose my edge.
If you want to learn how to have compassion for yourself but don’t have the time or budget to invest in the 8-week course, I highly recommend reading Kristin Neff’s book. It’s full of great insights and practical exercises and will help you be more compassionate towards yourself. I still read this book once in a while when I have the feeling I’m becoming less kind to myself.
